Happy Monday Everyone and Happy President’s Day! Our Core Purpose is to Beautify the World. I love rainy weekends, and true to form, I had one of the more relaxing weekends I can remember – I even got eight hours of sleep Saturday night! Combine that with my deep appreciation for our Founding Fathers…let’s go!
In 1755, George Washington was a 23-year-old colonial volunteer for the British army in the French and Indian War. During the Battle of Monongahela, Washington had two horses shot out from under him and four bullets pass through his coat, yet not even one touched his body. He later wrote that he had been “protected beyond all human probability and expectation.”
Indian warriors who fought that day said the same. Years later, a chief from the Algonquin tribe, told Washington that his men had repeatedly aimed at him but could not bring him down, declaring, “a power mightier far than we shielded you from harm.”
The same pattern appeared again in 1777, during the American Revolution battle at Princeton, where Washington rode within 30 yards of enemy lines to rally his troops. American officers turned away, unable to watch what they believed would be his certain death—yet once again, he emerged without a scratch.
As I reflect on these stories of Washington, and to a much less dramatic extent, our story at Focal Pointe, purpose doesn’t show up as a loud announcement. I think enduring purpose, much like success, shows up in the simple truth that you are still standing.
Every one of us, and Focal Pointe itself, has endured moments where we have been knocked down, discouraged, or overlooked. Yet here we are. Still standing. Still fighting. Still growing. It’s my belief, you don’t come through close calls, hard seasons, or defining moments, by accident. We come through them because there is work ahead that only we can do. People to influence that only we can reach. Standards to elevate that only we can set.
Whatever fire you’ve walked through, whatever near‑miss you’ve survived—whether in life, in work, in leadership, or in the quiet battles no one else sees—perhaps those moments weren’t just obstacles. Perhaps they were preparation. I believe people like you—people of integrity, grit, humility, professionalism, and heart—are preserved for impact. Again, maybe not at the enormous magnitude of George Washington, but impact nonetheless.
Like America, our purpose is unique and hopeful. Let’s step into it boldly, lead with courage, and serve with heart. Perhaps, in our own modest way, we too will feel the satisfaction of building something that inspires others long after we’re gone.
Have a great day! John
